The inspiration for ‘Odds Are’ came from two sources: my wife and my daughter. My wife, Melinda Culea, an actress (A-team, St. Elsewhere, X-Files, Chicago Hope, Family Ties) urged me to do a totally independent project. My daughter, Lily, contributed the story. She and her friends in high school played a challenge game called ‘odds are’. Coincidently, she learned about an actual incident where the game took a dark turn. We wrote a treatment and then moved the events from Eastern Europe to California and shaped the scenario around the footprint of our house, the beaches and neighborhoods of Santa Monica, and the desert outside of Mojave. Two key reasons I committed to the project was that the resolution was truly unexpected and that it wasn’t a horror/fantasy scenario. It could have happened to anyone’s daughter or son.
